Imagine not knowing where you'll sleep tonight. For many in Laramie County, this is a daily reality. With a homeless rate of approximately 12% in 2023, the need for effective support systems is more critical than ever. Homelessness remains a significant challenge in many communities across the nation. In 2024, there were 1,500 homeless children in schools across Laramie County and seniors between the ages of 55 and 64 are becoming the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.

Community Action of Laramie County, Inc (CALC) is committed to tackling this urgent issue by offering crucial services and support to individuals experiencing homelessness. Through their various programs aimed at housing stabilization, CALC is not just providing shelter but is also empowering individuals to regain control of their lives. This post highlights CALC's vital role in improving access to housing and support within our community.

Transitional Housing Program

One of the main ways CALC assists those at risk of becoming homeless is through its transitional housing program. This initiative provides temporary housing for individuals without a stable place to live. In 2024, the Single Resident Occupancy (SRO) units, accommodated over 50 individuals, helping them find safety and a chance to regroup. The SRO's go beyond merely offering a place to sleep; it creates a supportive community where individuals can access essential services.

In addition to SRO units, CALC has several family units available for familes who are at risk of becoming homeless or who are homeless currently. All Housing clients benefit from intensive case management services that help them identify the root causes of their housing issues. CALC staff work closely with clients to craft personalized plans that guide them toward long-term housing solutions. This hands-on approach ensures that each individual receives the support they need to regain stability.

Veteran Housing Program

Another way CALC assists those who are homeless is through its Veteran Bridge Housing program. This initiative provides temporary housing for homeless veterans. In 2024, the Veteran Housing Program accommodated over 46 individuals, helping them find safety and security off the streets. Like the transitional housing programs, Veteran housing creates a supportive community where individuals can access essential services. Clients benefit from intensive case management services and support as CALC works with the Veterans Administration to seek stable long-term housing. CALC believes in serving those who served our country.

Outreach and Prevention Initiatives

CALC also prioritizes prevention and housing stability through various outreach initiatives. The organization collaborates with community partners to help families facing eviction or severe financial distress. In 2024, CALC provided assistance to 54 families enrolled in Project Hope with supportive services, financial assistance and intensive case management to help guide them on their path to self-sufficiency.

These outreach efforts include financial counseling and connecting families to local resources such as food banks and job placement services. This proactive approach emphasizes the importance of collaboration between local businesses, government agencies, and community members, ultimately leading to sustainable solutions for homelessness.

Building Community Resilience

Community Action of Laramie County serves as a cornerstone of support in addressing the complexities of homelessness. Through short-term assistance like our SROs, Family Housing Units, and Veteran Housing Units, CALC not only stabilizes lives but also nurtures overall community resilience. Our comprehensive approach to tackling homelessness highlights the power of teamwork and compassion. Addressing health disparities and drug addiction with behavioral health and Medication Assisted Treatment for opioid addiction coupled with wrap-around case management for job skills, life skills, and other essential supportive services, CALC takes a holistic and comprehensive approach to community and individual well-being.

As we strive to combat homelessness and its contributing factors, CALC strives to meet the client where they are, and demonstrates the significance of compassionate support. By encouraging open dialogue and collaboration, we can create brighter futures for all individuals facing housing insecurity and related challenges.
